Do you wish you had an easy way to review the skills that you have taught? Are you frustrated when your students “forgot” what you taught them a few weeks ago? Have you been wondering how to incorporate the Common Core Standards into your classroom? Are you worried that it is “one more thing” you have to cram into your already busy schedule?
Well, I’ve been in your shoes and it has motivated me to create a solution that will work for students as well as teachers.
I am happy to share with you a simple, yet effective way to make sure you are addressing Common Core objectives. I’ve created Daily Common Core & More. Currently I am writing 1st and 2nd grade versions only.
Each month provides 4 weeks worth of review and practice in math and language arts.
I designed the program around a 5 day rotation of skills.
Each page is identified with a letter of the alphabet. This way, no matter what day of the week the month starts on, you can go through the pages sequentially. There are 20 pages of math and language art skills for the month. Each skill has the CCSS identification number for easy reference.
Flexibility has been built into this program too. You can also decide to concentrate on a certain set of skills for an entire week. If you look at the top of the sheets, you will notice a different creature for letters A,B, C, D, & E. Pages with the same creature will have the same focus skills applied with different questions.
For example, all pages with a caterpillar have the children practicing multiple meanings. If you use the letter sequence, the students would practice multiple meanings every 5 days. Using the creature code, you could have intensive practice for 4 days and use a Writing Prompt or Making Words activity to complete the week.
It’s all up to you and what your students need.
Here is a sample of one page. Notice for language arts the skills are using sight words and alphabetical order. The math skill is place value. The Common Core Standards are listed right next to the activity.
Here is another sample page focusing on plural nouns, common nouns, and 2-digit addition without regrouping.
Each month also includes 4 informational readings with activities. This page is from the October edition and teaches about chipmunks.
To round out the month of skills, there are Bonus pages for each month. They are perfect for those unusual days: assembly day, shortened schedule, substitute emergency plans, or just for fun!
Daily Common Core and More is perfect for Morning Work, quick assessments for progress monitoring and planning, meaningful practice for those awkward 10-15 minute spaces in your schedule, or homeschooling parents of 7-8 year olds.
My plan is to write monthly units for the entire school year over the summer and have them ready for the coming school year.
