Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

A told B and B told C

I’ll beat you to the top of the coconut tree!

And off you go into the catchy rhythm and rhyme featuring the letters of the alphabet. Kids easily memorize the words and repetition which makes this a fun and educational early story. It’s one of our family favorites!

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr.

Brown Bear brown Bear

Another wonderful story by Bill Martin Jr. is Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?  In this story, the illustrations help the reader make a prediction about the animal on the following page. Children love the repetition which allows them to engage with the story and build those early literacy skills. Another well-loved story!

Five Minutes’ Peace by Jill Murphy

five-minutes-peaceI’m not sure who loves this book more; me or my kids! However I am certain every mom will identify with Mrs. Large, a mother of three young children. All she wants is a five minutes break to relax and catch her breath. Sounds simple, right? Wrong! The detailed illustrations and humorous elephant children make this a delightful tale. You AND your children will enjoy this tale.

Is Your Mama a Llama? by Deborah Guarino

Mama a Llama

“Is your Mama a llama?”  starts each riddle as a baby llama named Lloyd tries to guess what kind of animal his friends are. Your children get to guess along with Lloyd as each new character describes attributes of their own mama. The whimsical illustrations by Steven Kellogg make this a bedtime favorite.

When I started teaching, I quickly realized that student teaching didn't prepare me for the real challenges of being alone in a classroom full of young children. The learning curve was steep and time was limited. That is why I created the Literacy Garden. My hope is this will be a place for inspiration, mentoring, and connecting.
