One of the ways I get to know my students better is through conferring and using reading interviews for students. I learn so much from their answers in a short amount of time, and it helps me to plan better ways to meet their needs.
If you have younger students, send it home for their parents to complete. When they are returned, I spend an evening reading and jotting anecdotal notes about my new students.
Ways to Use Reading Interviews for Students
- Closely look at the strategies the child is using when comprehension breaks down. You can use this information to determine strategy instruction lessons.
- If I have a reluctant reader who loves beavers, then I will be sure to grab some beaver books from the library to share with him. If another child loves poetry, I will introduce her to other poets as well as books with a predictable rhythm and rhyme to expand her reading diet.
- When choosing books for small groups, consider grouping students by fiction or nonfiction lovers.
- E-book lovers? Consider websites such as Epic.
- Use the responses for follow-up questions when you confer with the student.
