Reading a story to your child isn’t just a nice ritual before bedtime. Research has shown that reading aloud to a child is the single most important activity that leads to language development. According to Dr. Betty Bardige, reading aloud to young children not only stimulates language and cognitive skills, it also increases curiosity, memory, and motivation. Children who are read to before attending school have a huge academic advantage compared to those who haven’t had those experiences. You might wonder how is reading to a child different than just having a conversation. Typically, a story exposes the child to a larger vocabulary and concepts not common in day to day conversations.
Second, reading to your child fosters a positive attitude towards books and reading. Books can take the mind into wonderful adventures as well as help children cope with difficulties or stress.
It is important to read to older kids too! Did you know only 17% of parents of children ages 9-11 read aloud to them? However, over 80% of older children reported that they enjoyed or loved being read to! Plus the benefits of reading to elementary aged children include hearing good fluency and expression, expanding their vocabulary, and exposing them to various genres and authors.
