Frog and Toad: Facts and Fiction

2 min read No Comments

Arnold Lobel’s beloved characters Frog and Toad are popular stories with developing readers. The characters in this series  provide a great opportunity to practice the skills of compare and contrast. I like to use this story as a launching opportunity to read and write about factual information about frogs and toads.

We continue the skill of comparing and contrasting by having the  students analyze a table of data that I created about frogs and toads. Did you know that toads don’t have teeth?Frogstoadchart

Then I have my students write a paragraph explaining three ways frogs and toads are different from each other and another paragraph that explains what they have in common. The final draft goes on colorful writing papers.

I also like to integrate ELA topics with science. Here the students create a tabbed mini book about the life cycle of a frog.

FrogToadPreview1Another way to integrate nonfiction with fiction is through the use of CAN – HAVE – ARE statements. These can be displayed on oversized chart paper, or printed for student use.

Young student can use these sentences to create their own informational projects.

This unit has three levels of activities so you can differentiate within your classroom to meet the needs of your students while still all learning about frogs and toads.

FROGTOADMegaUnitCOVERThis 48 page unit includes 3 levels of informational text and writing activities on frogs and toads.

Therefore, you can customize the reading and writing difficulty based upon the needs of your students.

Level 3 is targeted for 3rd grade Common Core Standards. If you teach a lower grade, this might provide extra challenge for those who are ready for it.

Level 2 is targeted for 2nd grade Common Core Standards.

Level 1 is the easiest level. These activities can also make sure your struggling students can be successful during your study of frogs and toads. As you look through the unit, you can pick and choose the activities that best meet the needs of each student.

When I started teaching, I quickly realized that student teaching didn't prepare me for the real challenges of being alone in a classroom full of young children. The learning curve was steep and time was limited. That is why I created the Literacy Garden. My hope is this will be a place for inspiration, mentoring, and connecting.
