Scaredy Squirrel – Mentor Text

Today’s featured book is Scaredy Squirrel by Melanie Watt. Not only has this beloved series won numerous awards, but a television series on the books began in 2011.

In case you aren’t familiar with this character, let me tell you a bit about him. As his name suggests, Scaredy has many fears; from  mosquitoes, ants, germs, to polka-dot monsters and confetti. Some, you may relate to as well! So Scaredy has become an expert on how to avoid them at all cost. He designs a plan, takes along an emergency kit, and if all else fails, will play dead. Of course, like our lives, things rarely go along as planned.

Children can identify with this character and learn that sometimes things aren’t as bad as we feared. Sometimes, taking the risk to do something unfamiliar can result in unexpected rewards!

The predictable structure of each Scaredy Squirrel adventure makes it a fun text to model creative writing. Using some of the author’s text features, I’ve created a writing prompt called Scaredy Squirrel Visit’s Your Home. 

The first page has space for the child to use their imagination to explain some activities they did with Scaredy Squirrel. Perhaps he went to practice with him, or helped her with her homework.

There is also a place to record that day’s schedule. Scaredy likes to know these things in advance!

Then there is an option to draw an illustration, or glue a photograph,

The imaginary fun continues on page two.

While there are stuffed animals of Scaredy Squirrel, I provided a printable cut out version for you.

This writing project was one of my students’ favorite.
