July Pick 3 for Summer Planning

I trust you are enjoying your summer break and the change of pace.  For me, summer time is not only a time to recharge my batteries, but also a time to reflect upon what I’d like to do better or more effectively in the coming year.  I have several places I turn for inspiration: professional books, teacher blogs, and Pinterest! So here are 3 ideas that I am excited to try with my upcoming class:

1

KaboomHave you ever heard of the game Kaboom? I was intrigued. So I visited Saddle Up for Second Grade to find out the rules. All you need is a box of popsicle sticks, permanent markers, and some plastic cups and a timer. You can write math facts or sight words on the sticks. You also create 3-5 KABOOM! sticks. Then you color one end of all of the sticks. To play, all the sticks are placed colored end up. Without looking, a student draws one stick. If the answer is correct, they keep the stick. If they answer incorrectly, the stick gets placed back into the cup. If a player draws the Kaboom stick, they have to place all their sticks back into the cup. At the end of a certain amount of time, the player with the most sticks wins. I think my students will LOVE practicing their spelling words and math facts while playing Kaboom!

conversation notebooksThis idea warmed my heart and I think it will be special to my students as well.  Fellow teacher / blogger Teaching in Progress shared this great idea as a way to build relationships. Each child gets a notebook to write in.  They keep it in their desk.  Students write a note to their teacher and leave it on the teacher’s desk. When convenient, the teacher writes a reply.  Students can write  as little or as often as they like. I’ll be picking up some notebooks at the Dollar Store this summer! teacher binder

When I saw this Pin by Christine, it instantly caught my eye! I am a sucker for anything cute, floral, and organizational. These editable pages for a teacher binder is calling me “You need me… you want me… gotta have me!” How about you? If this is your style, click on the picture to go to Christine’s PIN.

I’m linking up up with my blogging  friends, Ashley at Just ReedLisa at Pawsitively Teaching and Marissa at Inspired Owl’s Corner for our monthly Pinterest Pick 3 Party! Look for more great ideas below.

When I started teaching, I quickly realized that student teaching didn't prepare me for the real challenges of being alone in a classroom full of young children. The learning curve was steep and time was limited. That is why I created the Literacy Garden. My hope is this will be a place for inspiration, mentoring, and connecting.
